TOWNSVILLE RIOTS.
GUARDING THE COURT. POLICE FIX BAYONETS. DEMAND SURRENDER OF ARMS. (Received 11.45 a.m.) BRISBANE, this day. The Court at Townsville, where the unionist leaders charged with participation in the riots and inciting to violence were remanded, was guarded by police witli Hxed bayonets. A meetign of Cabinet decided to close all the hotels in Townsville until the trouble is over. The proclamation calls upon citizens there to refrain from participating in demonstrations. A further proclamation is being issued calling on all possessed of firearms to hand them to the magistrate at Townsville, threatening prosecution for failure to comply.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
| ATTACKS ON POLICE. GUNSHOPS RAIDED BY MOB. UNIONISTS DECLARE A STRIKE. BRISBANE, June 30. Further trouble occurred in Townsville to-day, when the arrested unionist leaders were remanded for a week. A mass meeting of unionists thereupon decided that no work should be done until the arrested leaders were released. Subsequently a crowd attacked four policemen in the street. Several shots were fired and then n rush took place to the meat works, where the crowd ill-treated the manager. A crowd rnided two shops and secured a considerable number of rifles and a quantity of ammunition. The police, so far, have taken no action.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
