STEAMER'S ROUGH HANDLING.
BUFFETED IN A GAI.E. ~:*KORT OF COAL ON" BAR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WESTPORT, Sunday. The Anchor Line coastal steamer Kennedy, of 236 tons, received a rough handling in the Buller roadstead to-day. The ejector-feed pipe being carried away, ana| the vessel being short of coal, Captain Beggitt decided to attempt to work tho, bar, although there was a heavy sea ; running at the time. The vessel was; driven out of the channel, and for a time | it looked as if she had little hope of I being saved. The captain, however, got her out of her perilous position with the loss of one lifeboat and decking, andj put to sea. I Late in the afternoon a further at-j tempt was made to get into port, and after a trying experience with heavy scan, and signals against entry, this was accomplished, with the engine-room about half full of water. The second engineer, second mate, and | a sailor sustained slight injuries.
