LATE SHIPPING.
Newcastle. June 22.—Arrived: Kaltuna, 8.5., from Auckland. At the recent Arbitration Court sittings an application was made, under the Statute Law Amendment Act of last session, by the Auckland Soft Goods Union of Workere, to have a preference clause included in its award. This was opposed by the employers, and the Court declined to make the amendment, on the gTOund that the Act in question gave it no power to amend an award in this respect-
On the voyage to Kew Zealand the transport Waimana, which arrived at Auckland this morning, passed near the Azores, and in doing so sighted the flagship marking the course for the American aeroplane that attempted to cross the Atlantic. Subsequently those who were aboard the transport learned that they had just missed seeing the aeroplane itself.
i The funeral of the late Mrs Shepherd, I wife of Mr. H. M. Shepherd, J.P., of Birtook place to-day at the Birjkenhead cemetery, and was attended by ja large and representative gathering, mii eluding the Mayors of Birkenhead and JNorthcote (Messrs. J. P. McPhail and A. jE. Greenslade), and Mr Wm. Wallace ! (chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board and member of the Auckland Harbour Board). A large number of beautiful wreaths were received", including one ifrom the Birkenhead Borough Council, ;of which body Mr H. M. Shepherd and Itwo sons (Messrs Thos. M. and Reginald IShepherd) have at different periods been I members. The sen-ice at the house and graveside waa impressively conducted by ithe Rev. Percy Cook (Methodist). The i deceased lady, who leaves a large number of descendants, was held in the ihighest esteem by a very wide circle of (friends, for her many sterling qualities .and her untiring and unostentatious 'work for numerous deserving objects.
