HOLES IN A ROOF

A CITY COUNCIL MYSTERY.

The mystery of what appears to have been a 'deliberate attempt to evict a family by underhand means from a house in Hepburn Street, owned by the City Council, was ventilated at a meeting of the Council last night. CMr. T. Blood'worth inquired if the Council members and officers were aware of the fact 6, and he and Mr. M. J. Savage stated that the position was that a 6oldier with a wife and eight young children lived in the house, and had unexpectedly found the house flooded by a recent rain. Complaint was made, and the speakers and _ilr. .T. Burton (chairman of the Endowment Committee) had examined the roof, which had been recently painted, and found indications that boles had been cut in the guttering, and had caused flooding. Mr. Savage stated that as a result of the downpour two of the children had contracted colds, and one of them had to have hospital treatment. The Council members mentioned had made inquiries. but had been unable to trace the matter to any person. In response to Mr. Nerheny. it was statpd that the family, which were in poor •circumstances, were behind with the rent, and Councillor Nerheny commented that the matter looked particularly suspicious, and the person responsible for it should get six months in gaol. Other members suggested police action, in conjunction with a reward, in an endeavour to discover the perpetrator of the outrage. The matter was left in the hands of Mr. J. Burton for inquiry.
