Government the necessity for a. progres- | sive development policy in respect to i land settlement is one of the main re- ! commendations of the Farmers' Union Executive to the Provincial Conference, to open in Auckland on Tuesday, the 27th i inst. They ask that the following recommendations be forwarded on to the Government : — "The making available of the unused lands of the Crown, and of Native and European owners, and by the acquisition by the Crown of properties already in production which can be acquired at prices which will allow of successful closer settlement." "That the native land laws be consolidated and so remodelled as to prevent the retarding of production, and the proper reading and railing of the country, I and for the checking of purely speculative dealing in native land.-;." "That the Native Land Board organisI ation be removed fr'>m the Native De- ; partmcTit, and brought under the Land ] and Purvey Department." I The Mangapai Branch recommend-; I (inter alia): "That we urge the Government to open up the Northern gumfielde for settlement under a system of freo selection." SOLDIER SETTLEMENT. Several remits arc submitted by the executive on the subject of soldier settlements. The first reads as foilowe: —■ ""That the Government be urged to at once provide an adequate and competent staff to deal 'with the settlement of returned soldiers on the land, and for thi? purpose set up in each land district one, or if need be more, district, land-purchase boards, so that inspection of land offered and purchases may be dealt with greater promptitude.
