THE HOUSING PROBLEM. COXFERHS'CE RECOMMENDATIONS. (3y Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The Town Planning Conference waa concluded to-night. A committee appointed to consider the housing problem recommended that the Government should recognise; the housing shortage as one of the pressing national questions, and should co-oper-ate with local authorities in carrying out 'housing schemes on town planning lines. The State should undertake 'the financing scheme, and subsequently full control should be in the hands of municipalities. It suggested that the Government should subsidise local bodies up to one-third of the cost of the building r-ehemes, and that the sum of £1.000,000, a≤ a subsidy, be at once set aside. The report was adopted. A committee appointed to consider the improvement of towns and citiee recommended that on the passing if the Town Planning Act it should be made compulsory, when any area exceeding five acres was subdivided, for the owner to make over to the local body 10 per ■■er.t at least of the total saleable area to be subdivided. The riport was adopted. In replying to a resolution of thanks f.ir calling tlie delegates together, the Hon. G. W. Russell said it would be hie duty to bring the proposals of the conference before Cabinet.
