SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —As a visitor to this country I should like to know how much longer the people here are going to be content to he made the laughing stock of the whole world, with their so-called quarantine and health restrictions. All this embargo on shipping is absurd, and, of course, only too plain, the 'flu ha«s been used to hide the real cause of inadequate accommodation at the quarantine stations of New Zealand. When the real danger was present, then steamers were allowed in with their passengers. Considering Australia (Sydney, -Melbourne, Adelaide and Western Australia) are now free from restrictions, it is doubly absurd, especially as over there the 'flu , was very different to the epidemic here of November last. It is a very poor ex- ; cuse to quote the Manuka cases aa | a sample of what one might expect, as 1 probably, had the quarantine quarters been in an altered condition, there might 1 have been a very different tale to tell. I The least said about the disgraceful ;quarantine (or rather want of decent conditions existing in Xew Zealand) the ! better. Australia never stopped shipping" when the epidemic was here. Surely iit is quite time all this nonsense ended, ■ and people were allowed their freedom to | travel again. Why should those poor ! New Zealand people at present in Sydney be held up just to please a few here who are airing their authority while the heads of the country are away?— I am, etc., ~ J. SMITH.
