Two first offenders were convicted and discharged. Mary Ann 8. Uilam (n't), for being found drunk while in charge of a horee and cart, was fined 20/. THE SINS OF SUSAN. Sasan Brunton (44) admitted a charge of drunkenness, but denied a charge of vagrancy. She had been aeen yesterday; afternoon to accost a man, and when & plain-clothes constable followed them he found them in a recess with the man giving the woman a drink of whisky from a bottle. She was then drunk. Accused had been seen wandering about the streets for a week previously. She said she had given the man half-a-crown to get drink for her, and the drink wae her only trouble. Claude Randolph Marmont (31) admitted having obtained 48/6 worth oi goods from Wiseman and Sons, 57/ worth from Jno. Burns and 00., and 56/, worth from A. E. Frost, by false pretences.' These goods had been obtained in February- He told Wiseman's that he was a horse-breaker at Mangere with, a lot of work to do, and obtained gear for such work. 'He represented to Burns and Co. that he was a sanitary drainer with a. contract on hand, and got drainer'd tools, and his tale to Mr. Frost iwos that he was a returned soldier wha owned a large quantity of live stock then on the road, and he got goods which seemed to bear out the story. As a matter of fact npne of his stories was true, and since February he had keen sentenced to four months' imprisonment for other false presences, and was now serving the sentence. John Graham (20) admitted that on ■Monday he etole a dozen packets of cigarettes and a packet of tobacco, valued at 10/, the property of George Cossey. The facts stated were that when a tobacconist in Dominion Road was away at tea, accused broke a chain that held the shop door, and took the cigarettes. He happened to leave be« hind him a square of billiard-cue chalk, which was noted by Plain Clothes Constable Potter, and eventually led to the detection of accused. When he admitted the theffc he said he had been out of work, and had no money for smokes. There wae nothing previously known against him, beyond a tendency to being over-fond of billiard saloons. Graham was admitted to probation fGT twelve months, with particular reatrio tions on billiard-playing in saloons. THE LADIES TOOK A HAND. Walter Thomas Kielty was charged that on February 24 he ansaulted an unknown man in Cook Street. Evidence wae given by two female residents of Cook Street that albout l> p.m. on the date in question they saw Kielty and fiome companions dn a. cart drive into Otfok Street, and an elderly man got in front of the cart while crossing the street. Kieity, they said, got out of the cart and struck and kicked tho man, ■who, however, went away before the policeman summoned by the witnesses arrived. The witnesses called the police because tiiey considered it a cowardly assault Kielty denied tJiat ha kicked any man, and stated that tbe man he hit was one who attacked him. fu-et. Moees Peterson Geddea (24), charged with the theft of a bicycle at Huntly. wae remanded, an bail, to appear at Huntlv on Monday. Percival Jr.o. Hill (29), for re/using to quit the premise of the British Hotel when he was disorderly and requested to go, and for assaulting Joseph Molloy when he was put out of the hotel, was fined £6 and 8/- costs.
