NORTHERN AUCKLAND.

I MR. LYSNAR'S IMPRESSIONS. Mr. W. D. Lysnar, who hae just completed an extended lecturing tour of the Northern Auckland district, under tha auspices of the Farmers' Union, has given a Gisborne paper some notes oti. his impressions of the country he traversed. Mr. Lysnar said this was hie first visit to North Auckland. If possessed great capabilities of development, there being many natural advantages, such ue fine waterways. A great deal of the country, however, wae not productive from a pastoral point of view, niainlj , because the owners had been looking for a living from the kauri timber and the kauri gum. It was now apparent that both the timber and the gum would soon become worked out, and consequently it waa paying the owners to convert, it into pastoral land. Aβ to the "roadless north," he agreed the. roads were shocking, being mostly clay, ami converted into quagmires by a' shower of rain. There 'were, of course, exceptions, but he wae referring to the main arterial roads. Personally he was fortunate enough to escape even a shower of rain, and was able to keep all his appointments. In the extreme north, at Xaitaia, in the Mangonui district, there was a good main road to Mangonui harbour, the port of the.district, and the settlers were going in for a. further loan, of £60,000 to complete their other roads. Railway construction in North Auckland is being pushed or. at different points in the Whangarei and Bay of Inlands districts, and in this connection the Government is employing the Jugoslavs, of whom he saw one big camp. The Gisbornite subsequently took a short rett at Russell, and enjoyed a day or two at king-fishing.

Mr. Lysnar has beeh asked to go to. the Waikato district on a similar miesion, and may arrange to do so later.
