VICTORIA ARCADE.

APPLICATION TO CLOSE OPPOSED BY COUNCIL.

An application on behalf of the New Zealand Insurance Company for permission to effect alterations to Victoria Arcade, including the closing of the Arcade proper, came before the City Council last evening.

The Mayor moved that the matter boreferred to the Works Committee with a view to having the Arcade kept open. It appeared to him that this was an exceedingly important matter, and that the Council should not give its consent, although legally such might not be necessary. Every effort should be made to keep the thoroughfare open for the benefit of tbe public. The motion was carried.
