DRAINAGE WORKS.

SCHEMES IN HAND. REPORT FROM THE CITY ENGINEER,

Schemes for various sewer extensions and renewals, so as to provide for work under the heading of the drainage loan during his absence, were submitted to the council by the City Engineer last evening. He pointed out that work had already been authorised or recom-mi.-nded as follows: —'New sewer in Manukau Road, Parnell, on eastern footpath, £770: new severs In Victoria Street, Duke Street, (iraham and Hardinge Streets. .-£2,411. It was stated that in connection with the former work examination of the (ewers in Selwyn Terrace. Eglinton, York and Earl Streets revealed the desirability of relaying these sewers, the cost of which he estimated as follows:—Selwyn Terrace to Gittos Street. £400: York, Islington. Karl, f'arfieid, and Winrlsot Streets, €S*>o. It would be necessary to intercept the new sewer proposed to be laid in Selwyn Terrace and the existing sewer in ("ittos Street at present discharging into the Mechanic's Ray sewer, and to provide a new tunnel sewer 1,035 ft long between the junction of Gittos Street and Selwyn Terrace to an existing overllow chamber 70ft north ol* the Drainage Hoard's main sewer east of the railway. lie estimated the cost., including provision of two overMow chambers and one manhole. at £1,400. It was recommended that the re-laying of the Oin pipe sewer between Mini wood Crescent and Gibraltar Crescent should he undertaken before the paving of Manukau Road was done. The length of sewer between Ueorge Street and Domain Drive might require renewal, but before being undertaken it would be desirable to sink shafts on the sewer, and more definitely ascertain its exact position. The sewer in (laybrook Road required extending, and probable renewal of the existing portion. Estimates could be readily furnished before the work required'to be done. New sewers would be required on the western footpath of Albert Street, between Moore -fnd Victoria Streets, at an estimated cost of £1.300, comprising the construction of 705 ft of lßin pipe, 300 ft of 15in pipe, 255 ft of bin pipe, three manholes and one lampbole. Regarding the low-level drainage, plans were generally in a forward state. It was recommended that this work should not be undertaken before the commencement of next summer. It would be necessary to submit fresh estimates of each section of work as it was undertaken. The report was adopted.
