ROADSIDE V. NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING. *—. People with goods to sell are more discriminating in the way they spend money for advertising than they used to be. A great deal of money has been spent in the past for advertising on the sides of barns, signs erected along highways and railroads, mileage posts, etc. But it does not conform to the principles of scientific advertising. Advertising accomplishes results in two ways: First, by giving reasons for buying an article that will appeal to a man's judgment and common 6cnsc. Second, by conveying a general impression that a dealer is wide awake and enterprising and doing a big business. It is manifest that wayside advertising cannot make good on the first basis. People pass a roadside sign too quickly to examine it and reflect over any argument it may present. Particularly in these days when the travelling public hurry past in curtained automobiles at twenty miles an hour, a signboard makes only the most fleeting impression, and it ! makes no appeal by argument or reason. Signs exposed to the weather quickly deteriorate aud look unsightly, that advantage is lost unless the signs are carefully kept repainted or rcpapered, which costs a lot of money now. Also, to give that impression, the wording and ideas of a sign ought constantly to be changed. AYlieu a man erects a sign and lets it stand there without change for month after month, it ceases to make an impression. But to keep changing it so as to convey new ideas would be very expensive. Newspaper advertising meets all these objections. it gives a man all the space necessary to address a person's intelligence. And it can be. changed whenever necessary to give the impression of enterprise and wide awake spirit.—''Fourth Estate."

A correspondent writes:—"Apart from tlie damage done by the hurricane in Fiji on February !), planters and others will be completely disillusioned as to their immunity from a 'blow' in what has hitherto beep called tho 'charmed month,' as this is the first occasion in the memory of tlie 'oldest inhabitant' on which a hurricane has occurrod in February. Now, however, this month has fallen into disgrace, and will henceforth be considered as having lost a desirable reputation built up over many years."
