E>r. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, left last night to visit the northern portion of his Diocese.

The death is announced in Trance, on December 23, 1918, of Madame Rigoreau, wife of M. J. Rigoreau, formerly French Consul at Auckland.

Mr. Phil. T. Birch, president of the Master Painters' Federation, returned from Wellington by the express this morning, after having attended the annual sitting of that body. He has ibeen appointed to travel the Dominion to explain to the trade the aims and objects of the Federation.

The resignation hy cablegram has been received of Mr. W. Wilson, lecturer of electrical engineering at the Auckland University. The Educational Committee reported this to the council yesterday, and suggested in a report that the resignation be accepted, and that the arrangement made with Mr. S. Irwin Crooks to act as locum tenens to Mr. Wilson be continued for this year, and steps taken to fill the position in July next. The report was adopted.

Feeling reference to the passing of Canon C. M. Nelson was made before the business at the meeting of the Auckland University Council yesterday. The chairman (Mr. T. W. Leys) said lie wished to add his tribute to the memory of Canon Nelson, whose work in the College Registrarship for ten years had been faithfully and ably discharged. Mr. Leys moved the following , :—"The council expresses its regret at the loss the community hae sustained in the death of Canon C. M. Nelson, M.A., who served the Auckland University College as Acting-Professor of Classics and English in 1891, and as Registrar from July, 1907, to February 1917, and its sincere sympathy with his widow and other relatives in their sorrow." The motion was seconded and carried in the usual respectful manner.
