DOMINION'S SEA YOUTH.

SUGGESTED GUARD SHIPS. Ever since he hue been a member ot Parliament Mr. C. H. Poole has been an ardent advocate for the establishment of guard ships as training stations for the youth of the Dominion who prefer a life on the ocean wave to follow-1 ing a chore-going livelihood, and in dis-' cussing tlie matter with a pressman this morning he urged the present as a tine opportunity to secure suitable vessels r for the purpose. "In view of the proposal to destroy

the ships of the German fleet," eaid Mr. Poole, "it again occurs to mc what -I have advocated throughout my tenure of office as a representative in Parliament—the establishment of two drill or guard ships for training the young men of the Dominion who prefer service afloat to any other form of life. Now is the time to secure a couple of suitable vessels instead of allowing them all to! 6ink to Davy Jones' locker, where no! one can use them. From the standpoint of economy these vessels would be just floating training stations, with a tender of the Amokura type for actual sea training. The maritime factor will! always be an important one in the' affairs of the British Empire, and the work which our young men have done in, the Navy should be sufficient to encour-i age the authorities towards taking such a step as I suggest. 1 would strongly urge our Government, therefore, to| make an energetic appeal for the gift) of two suitable vessels for the purpose—j one for the North and another for the South Island. It really would not matter how large the boats were, toe-1 cause the maintenance would be con-j fined practically to barracks upkeep,! any sea-going training being supplied by! the tender.

"There are scores of ex-naval officers in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand, who would delight in rendering some advice to the State in connection with the training of these young fellows, if the environment such as would be afforded by the establishment of guard ships were provided by the State."
