Mr. J. A. Poster, of Sydney, is at the Grand Hotel Mr. Arthur Close, of Bay of Islands, is staying at the Star HoteL Mr. Edward E. Eagle, of Philadelphia, is staying at the Grand HoteL Mr. A. W. Porter, of Alameda, California, is staying at the Grand Hotel. The Revs. Fathers Ainsworth and Burchell returned from Sydney by the Riverina. Mr. C. J. Parr, M.P., returned from Wellington by the express yesterday morning. Mr. A. S. Bankart was a passenger for Wellington by the express last evening. Mr. T. Sir Frederick Lang, Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived by the express on Saturday. Mr. Harold Gregson returned yesterday after having- acted ac judge at the musical competitions in Wellington. Mr. R. Andersen, senior mail clerk at Napier Post Office, retires on superannuation shortly, after 40 years' service. Captain Mervyn Reed, :N.Z.M.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Reed, has returned to Auckland, and is staying at Cargen. Captain Vercoe, D.5.0., who also won the D.C.M., is 'being temporarily employed in the Auckland Military District. Mr. H. D. M. Haszard, Commissioner of Crown Lands, is to succeed Mr. W. H. Skinner in a similar position at Canterbury. Mr. H. E. Pacey has returned from Wellington, wiere he had been attending the meeting of the Dominion Butter Committee. Mr. James Buttle, general manager ot the New Zealand Insurance Company, returned from the South by the express on Saturday. The retirement of Major A. Tattersall, group commander at Rotorua, is announced. He will be succeeded by Capt. H. L. de F. Garland. Mr. Albert Spencer, president of the Employers' Association, left for Wellington last evening to attend a conference of the Federation. Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, secretary to the Treasury, is to succeed Colonel R- J. Collins, C.M.G., 1.5.0., as Comptroller and Auditor-General. Colonel N. P. Adams, C.M.G., of New Zealand Field Artillery, Commandant at Feathereton Camp, leaves for England l)y the Makura from Auckland. Major Sir Robert Walker and Lady Walker returned to Auckland yesterday from a motor tour through the Dominion. They are etaying at Cargen. Private John Evers, of Devonport, who returned to New Zealand by the Zealandic, has, according to information ■ received, been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. John Lodewyk Crowther is gazetted registrar of electors and returning officer for Taumarunui district, and Mr. Alfred James Claud Woodford for Waimarino district. Major Norton Francis, Director of Base Records, has retired and is to be succeeded by Major J. G. Roache, D.5.0., who was formerly on the staff of the Public Health Department. Mr. P. Purvis Webb, Deputy Comptroller and Auditor-General, retires at the age of 65, after exactly 50 years' eervice, and will be succeeded by Mr. 11. A. Lamb, Chief Audit Inspector. Mr. S. A. Longuet, of Messrs. A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd-, left for Wellington on Friday to take Tip the position vacate*! by the managing director, Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, who is leaving for London as the firm's representative. Mr. R. H. Stephens was presented by the Wellington Coal Trade Committee with a cigar and cigarette-holder as a token of appreciation of his services as secretary. Mr. Stephens now resumes duty with the Railway Department. Mr. Roy S. Johnston ibecomes secretary of the committee. Lieutenant L. Potter, New Zealand Staff Corps, has been' appointed as an area officer in No. 1 Group with headquarters at Auckland. He takes over the duties of Lieutenant Graham, who is now employed as 'Military Landing and Transport Officer, vice Captain Wilson, who has been demobilised. Mr. William Saunderson Cooper has, acording to a notice in the " Gazette," been appointed resident agent for the island of Aitutaki, Commissioner of the High Court of Cook Islands, Postmaster and Deputy-Registrar at Aitutaki. Mr. Thomas Duncan has been appointed to similar positons at Mangaia, and Mr. John Cheonnetti at Mauke Island. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland, Dr. A. W. Averill, leaves for Hamilton by train to-morrow, and will officiate at a Maori ordination on Wednesday. The Bishop will then go to Raglan and Kawhia districts for his annual visit to that portion of the diocese. Dr. Averil! next goes on his regular visitation to the parishes in the north, pretty well up to the North Cape, and is expected to return to Auckland a week before Easter. At the Birkenhead Borough Council Chambers on Friday the whole of the Council's staff assembled to bid farewell to Miss Sullivan, who is leaving the service of the Council in view of her approaching marriage, after having served in the capacity of assistant clerk for the past five years. A handsome silver teapot, suitably inscribed, was presented to her on behalf of the staff by the Town Clerk, Mr Greenslade. Mr. W. Gadsby, o* Te Kuiti, who judged at Warkworth Show ten days ago, and at Pukekohe last week, left by the Rarawa to-day to judge at the' New Plymouth Show this week. In his younger days Mr. Gadsby held an unbeaten record for sheep shearing in the Taranaki and Wanganui districts. His work was always the admiration of all, and he could always do one more sheep tiian the other man. The Rev. J. Wilkinson. M.A., of St. Andrew's, Epsom, has been appointed vicar of St. Aidan's, Remuera. As he will not be able to take up his duties for three months, Canon C. Coates, of Ohristchureh, will be in charge in the interim. The Rev. A. S. Fowler resigned the office of vicar of St. Andrew's on account of throat troubles, and expects to return to England shortly. Mr. Fowler was first stationed in Canterbury, then removed to New Plymouth, and for about ten years has done good service at the Remuera Church.
