DAIRYING INTERESTS.

aMAXGAMATioN pros:pects. "MUST ACT BENEFICIALLY." FARMERS' RESOLUTION. The matter of the amalgamation of fie various dairy companies operating in the South Auckland district hae been favourably considered by dairy farmers and others interested in the Clevedo-n district. The meeting was attended by air. H. E. Pacey, on behalf of the New Zealand Dairy Association, and .Mr. Dynes Fulton (Tuakau) on behalf of the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Company, ltd. Both addressed the meeting. Mr. Fulton explained that a committee of three directors from each company had been set up to consider the question, and on summing up the points the committee had decided that amalgamation was the best thing that could be done in the interests of the producer, and they were now considering the beet form in wJiieh to place the scheme before the producers for their consideration. He considered that the beet procedure for the two companies, when it was decided to amalgamate, would be to go into liquidation, and to then form a new company consisting of the amalgamated companies. The matter had reached the stage, he said, when it would shortly be placed before the suppliers for their consideration. He was sure that other companies in t!he South Auckland district would come into the amalgamation, besides the two companies at present most concerned. Mr. Pacey pointed out that some farmere said they liked competition, but competition was the extreme of co-(i[H!ra- j tioa. and was the most disastrous thing that could happ?n amongst co-operative concerns. He cited cases to prove his' statement. He referred to loss sustained through \va.nt of amalgamation in the diary companies throughout the | whole of the South Auckland province. There was loss through railage, carriage, handling, etc. which could be saved by amalgamation, and also better butter conld be manufactured, as it naturally folio-wed, that so much handling and carting about did not improve the quality of the cream. There was one and a-half million pounds turnover, in the South Auckland -province for the year, and he undertook to say that if I amalgamation came *bont generally it would mean not one and a-half millions ont three millions. He meeting unanimously agreed that an amalgamation of darryin? interests nrast act beneficially in the interests of dairy farmers generally.
