TRAMWAY FARES.
READJUSTMENT BY COTTNCTL. ' TWOPENCE ANY DISTANCE. ■ The City Council in committee haveij been considering the various proposals for an alteration of tramway fares to meet the demands to be conceded to employees. It is credibly reported that a decision has now been come to, and that definite proposals will be submitted to the next ordinary meeting of the City Council on Thursday of this week. The committee's report, we are informed, favours the imposition of a universal charge of twopence. That ie to say, that a ride of 100 yards in Queen Street, aird a journey to the boundaries of the municipality will alike cost twopence. The amount of additional revenue under a universal twopenny fare would i be very large, and the proposal would mean a big sum for the city treasury | apart from providing for the wage concessions made to employees. Involved in the agreement is an undertaking that the City Council will be responsible for the settlement of any future disputes. The details of the adjustment between the company and the council and the position of the suburban todies have not been disclosed.
