• 1 FBEIGHT SPACE ANT> I/AND! ! DEVELOP—ENX. The Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce met on Friday afternoon, the president, Mr. U. Burns, being in tbe chair. It was decided, on the suggestion of the president, that the Hon. Mr. Myers should be Interviewed with the object of' overcoming the difficulty at present experienced in obtaining shipping space for goods from New Zealand to Japan. The Council resolved to seek the Minister's assistance in a further endeavour to make arrangements with the Australian Government, by which a definite amount of freight space should be reserved for New Zealand in steamers bound for Japan.

! A letter from the Minister of Lands, the Hon. D. 11. Guthrie, In answer to a communication from the Council urging the importance of opening up waste lands iv the North Auckland district, stated that owing to the scarcity of labour, increased cost of materials, and generally unfavourable conditions, it was impossible to do much at the present time, although the Department was not neglecting the subject. "The question of breaking in one block of land adjacent to Auckland is being considered now, and if conditions can be made at all acceptable the work will be put in hand with as little delay as possible." wrote the Minister.

A letter from the Invercargill Chamber asking for co-operation in urging the New Zealand University to continue examinations for bookkeepers' certificates on the same standard as hitherto, wns referred to tho Council of the Society of Accountants for nn expression of opinion. The Council cord—lly agreed lo support a repatriation scheme drawn up by the representatives of the Second Division League nnd the Returned Soldiers' Association, which is to be submitted next week at a conference with members of Parliament.
