COUNTER-ATTACKS EAST OF ARRAS BROKEN. FAMOUS TITNNEL IN HnTOENBUKG LINE CLEARED. (Received 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, August 29. Sir Dmiglas il:ii<; roix>rt.s:- Southward' of the. Sommc we maintained pressure upon the enemy last night, advancing eastward ami northward of the Somrae as far as the neighbourhood of Fontaine lez Croisillcs. The night was comparatively quiet in the sector astride the Kcarpe. Strong enemy counter-attacks eastward and south-eastward of Vie-en-Artols, eastward ol Roiry, and in the vicinity of Gavrcllc, were repulsed with loss to the enemy after heavy lighting. OuJ advanced posts westward of Oppy were withdrawn slightly as a result of repeated hostile attacks. Tanks actively participated in the fighting southward and nortnward of the Soinnie on all possible occasions, and rendered very gallant and valuable service in cooperation with the infantry and other arms.— (A. and N.Z. and Kcuter.)
