ANZAC'S 560-MILE WALK.
ESCAPEE'S REMARKABLE STORY. LONDON, August 12. Private .1. L. -Vfwinan, N.o. 1074. of the 17th Battalion, a Newcastle miner, who enlisted in Sydney, ha« arrived in Lon.don after extraordinary experiences. He I escaped from a prison camp in East .Prussia in company with two llikwiuns. jHe covered frfK) miles in a month, and arrived in Petrograd on .lune 13. There he posed as a Ruraian soldier. On the journey he saw evidence of the hopeless disorganisation of the Russiane. lie suffered severely frntn exposure and shortage of food. German troops were [numerous. Once Newman was stopped and searched, lie admitted that he had escaped, but he told euch a pitiful story 'of a wife and children living in Russia that the Germans sympathetically released liim. Owing to the chaos in Petrogra-d Newman went to Archangel. No boat was going to England, so he worked his passage to Canada. He remained a fortnight at Montreal, and reached England ,in a troopship. Newman ie about 22 years old. He went through (Jallipoli, fought at Lone Pine, and was taken prisoner at Lagni- ' court last April twelve month.
