FOR FRANCE.

VICTORIA LEAGUE'S EFFORT. A SUCCESSFUL "DAFFODIL DAY." To-day is the Yiotoria League's tribute to Trance, and the lirst day in the campaign which is being organised in tlie whole of New Zealand to help the nation which is keeping civilisation afloat. Queen Street has been turned into a bower of flowers to remind Aueklandcrs of the beautiful country of France, where flowers spring Up so beautifully. Since France has been turned into the batletielil of Europe it is a remarkable fact that flowers spring up in such profusion ac has never been j-cen in France before, and the mothers of France are jtlad to think that the blood of their son; has made the ilovvers spring forth so beautifully. Before the war all the ladled of France were drawn up together in the "reat institution of the French Red Cross. and as soon as the war started all those who before had spent their time in amusement left their gay life and all rushed to their posts and were kept busy. This money winch is bein.s collected is {joiner to France not only to help attend to the French, but to our own New Zealand soldiers, who unloosed after by these French ladies. Since the beginning of the war the French soldiers have borne the brunt of the lighting, particularly while the other nations were being prepared. One would think that she would have no more men left. bur. the .L'reat push we have had lately shows that France i* t-til! standing, full of energy and full of strength. Since they have been able to start on the new offensive, and. under the leadership of the ■•rent General Fnch. to be.it bark the enemy, the day is fast approaching when the sacred soil of France will be rid of the Orman hordes. The effort, is proving very successful. and «c hope that Aueklanders will to-day show themselves as generous a> they have been in sending contributions. If Frenchmen were passing through Auckland to-day they would be reminded of their own country. All the nice, sprightly girls stop the passer-by at every step, and he cannot resist their smile? and taking way-, with the result that the subscription boxes are getting heavier and heavier. The helpers are very pleasant about, their work, and the people do not mind giving freely. Not one would refuse to help the poor soldiers who have been fighting so gal-l-.ntly. Some handsome donations of flowers liave been forthcoming, one. in particular, from Mr. Brett, consisting of hyacinths and anemones. bciii£r beautiful.
