MOPPING UP THE HINDENBURG LINE.

HARD FIGHTING AHEAD IN NORTHERN SECTOR.

(Received 11.45 a.m.) " LONDON, August. 28. "

Mr. Philip CiibiiS, telegraphing on Wednesday, says:— The attack waa renewed on Tuesday morning along the entire front, Canadians near Renin rested at night, and then began mopping up the HmdenImrg line, working towards Fontaine less Croisilles ami behind Oroinilles. The (iuard.s in the meantime were pushing round the other side of Croiailles from St. Leger/and the whole German line of resistance was l>eiiig pounded hard. It is steadily sagging into the Hindenburg defences, and it may be expected that the enemy will fight hardest in this northern sector. A good fresh Prussian division has already been engaged against the Canadians. The Australian advance on liotli banks of the Somme may be described as '■peaceful penetration." Tiy noon to-day patrols on the south side were within a mile of Dompierre, 11 miles due north of Chaulnes, clearing machine guns out of the neighbouring woods. The Australians have penetrated Vaux Wood, north of the river, continuing towards Curlu. No serious attempts were made to hold them. The G-crman rearguard was listless, having apparently been ordered not to resist if pressed hard. The Australian are again traversing wholly devastated country, and their progress is naiurally stow. It is on the whole a deliberate, almost a leisurely, journey towards IVronne, in marked contrast to their sharp, jerky attacks south of Bapaumc.— (A. and N.Z. and Iteuter.)
