STRONG COUNTER-ATTACK NORTH OF THE SCARPE,

1 - (Received 11.45 a.m.) i IXXNDON, August 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports:-AVe captured on Tuesday Foueaueourt southward pf the Somme, which the enemy had held strongly with machineguns. Northward of the famine we captured the bulk of Trone'e Wood, I taking a number of prisoners from the Prussian Guards Division. Southward of the Scarpe our First Army improved its positions astride the ArrasOombrai road and reached the outskirts of ITaucourt farm and Boiry Notre Dame. Northward of the Scarpe » strong counter-attack along the ArrasDouai railway forced Lack our advanced troops a few hundred yards to the old German trenches on Greenland Hill, where the attack broke down under our fire. We carried out a successful operation astride the Neuf BerquinEetaires road, advancing our lino on a four-mile front and taking a number of. prisoners. The United Press Association's correspondent at headquarters reports that there are further signs of German reinforcements, particularly southward of Bapaume, coming from Prince Kupprccht's reserves.—(A. and K.Z. 1 Cable.) LONDON", August 28. A wireless German ulVicial report states:—We arrested enemy attacks northward of the Scarpe before our line, which was bent back on Roeux. Southward of tile Scarpe we withdrew from the Monchy heights after bitter lighting. The enemy crossed the Monchy and Guemappe heights. The enemy took Tilloy and Martinpuicli.
