> « • .§■ EUGBY. _,' UXT\"EESITi" AND COLLEGE RIFLES WES. The Kugby Union championships were continued on Saturday afternoon at Eden lark and the show Grounds, the attendance- only being fair at each place- Itain fell before play commenced, but the area at the Show Grounds soon dried, thoug.i it was very soft at Eden Parte. College Rifles and University, the leading teams in the championship, both won, aud a piay-ofl* will be necessary. University defeated Ponsonby by O points to 6, after a keeuly contested game at Eden Park, where the ground was very greasy, and. in condition to nullify good, play, although the winners showed, some glimpses of back co-operation in the first half. As the result of a brilliant passlngi turn, Elliffe scored a line try. The secondhalf was largely confined to hard, forward operations, and Ponsonby were holding tbeir own before the conclusion. Gasparieh. and Thomas also scoretl for the winners. Kelly kicked a. goal, and. Aitken scored for Ponsonby. At the Show Grounds. College Rifles met and easily defeated a weak Marist Brothers team by 27 points to O. The game was ot « ragged nature, mnch of the play being wild, and this, together with the prevailing | wind, contributed to constantly changing attack and defence. But the College Rifles hacks, with the strong running of Da_o_-' and Wilson as the chief feature of their ; play, easily controlled the fortunes of the i game. The score of the winners consisted «if a penalty goal by Laxcai. one try by iPooley. and fire tries by Wilson, three of the tries being converted by Laiou. For Marist Brothers tries were scored by Benth and White, and Martin placed a field goal. SORTHEBN UJXIOTX. __ SU-TPRISE FROM l-AT-TTIME-Another average attendance of about 5,000 persons on Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon watched with something very near to astonishment the game between Ponsonby aud Maritime. The match was very fast all the way, and was really a keen struggle, although.it was not a very polished exhibition of the game. Nevertheless, there was nothing wanting in the way of excitement, and the team from the waterside led the way right to within a few minutes of the whistle. Then Ponsonby got a converted try, which gave them tbe lead, and made the total score seven points to six. McGregor got the only' Ponsonby try. and Maddisou kicked two goals. The first try for Maritime was scored by Hogg and the second by Davidson. Newton rather easily defeated Grafton by 2S points to 11. The gain- was fairly fast, but the winners had things very much tbeir own way. The scorers for Xewton ■were Thomas (2). Keenan VI), G. lies, and Gregory, tries: and Castles 12). lies (-). and Keenan, goals. Tfwersen made a try for tbe losers and goaled it. besides goaling three frees. It is rather unfortunate that ouce again a phtyer was ordered off the field, the referee considering he used his hands too freely. On this occasion it was the Ponsonby forward; 1.. Cadinau. who had no reason for alleged striking an oppouent. FOURTH GRADK. Richmond ti, defeated Ponsonby 0. FIFTH GRADE. Richmond 27. defeated Big Store 0. SIXTH GRADE. City 31, defeated Otahuhu 0.
