KuTopean corset makers have lad to return to the use of whalebone, which for many years had given place to steel as a stiffening for "stays." And it is also being used again for umbrella ribsBoth because of the shortage of steel. As a consequence the "whalebone of the blue -whale has gone up in price to £60 a ton, and that of the rorqual and right whale to £80 a ton. The following suggestion is made by the C'hristchuri-h ''Press": —"Seeing the necessity of retrenching labour in the Post and Telegraph Department, we venture to urge upon the authorities the adoption of a simple measure which . should economise the labour connected with the delivery of telegrams. It is a plan which has been in force in England for some years, and has worked ■well. We refer to the practice of telephoning, without extra charge,.the contents of a telegram to the addressee in all cases where the latter is on the list of telephone subscribers. The telegram itself is then delivered by post like a letter, so that a perfect check is provided against mistakes in telephoning, which, with ordinary care, ought not to happen. One woman clerk may in this way do the work at present performed by several telegraph messengers, and the addressees would get their telegrams moTe quickly than ;f these were delivered by hand. ... It is true that already arrangements can. be made by subscribers for the telephoning o f telegrams, but this involves the payment of a fee, rtjil not many people. *we fancy incuT the expense. Seeing that the plan would lessen the work of the Telegraph Office, one would think the Department ought to be clad to adopt it.' . If you get a chill taKe KAZOL immedi?.tely. It will prevent sore throat or tightness of the chest.—(Ad.). t
