DAMAGES FOR SLANDER.

GISBORNE, Saturday. Great public interest has been shown in the ease .before Mr. Justice Hosklng at the Supreme Court, in which Henry Ewart Hill, of Gisborne, proceeded against Lazarus Wolfe Balkind, ol Christchurch, money-lender, for the recovery of £1000 damages for alleged slander. The evidence of the plaintitl, who was represented by Mr. L. T. Burnard, showed that Will was agent in Gis'borne for Balkind in connection with the latter's money-lending business. In May last Balkind came to I Giaborne, and went to Hill's office, where he made use of the words comI plained of, viz., "You stole money. 1 say so, absolutely." The words "were I overheard by a clerk in Hill's employ, who took a note of them. Mr. H. B. Lusk, of Napier, and with him, Mr. T. A. Coleman, appeared for the defendant. The jury awarded plaintiff £100 damages. A nonsuit motion by Mr. Lusk, on the grounds of alleged privilege, which had been reserved during the hearing, will come up for argument on Tuesday.
