MUTUAL AID SOCIETY.

The eighth annual meeting and social of the "S. and C," Ltd., Mutual Aid Society was attended by about 250 members and friends. Mr. G. 11. K. Worsley occupied the chair.

Mr. 11. P. Caughey made feeling reference to the death In action of two members, and mentioned that 31 were nt the front or in training, and one was a prisoner in Germany. A silent vote of sympathy was passed, all standing. A hearty welcome was extended to Sergeant Knight and Privates Alison, Jull, Brenuan, and Harvey, Invalided home. The report and balance-sheet showed that £269 7/6 had been expended in sick aid for the year, while 128 cases had been reported, balance carried forward £305 3/2. The Income for the year was £291 11/2, of which £130 10/3 Is a £ for £ subsidy from Smith and Caughey. Ltd., and £12 10/8 interest on money held by them to the. Society's credit, the balance being made up of members' contributions. Without the Arm's assistance the work would have to be greatly curtailed, and on the motion of Messrs. Hutson and Flulason. a vote of thanks was curried to the directors for their support, and also for the continued use of the cottage at St. Heller's Hay. Last year's officers were re-elected with the exception of the vice-presidents, who resigned during the year, Mr. Ellis to go Into camp, while Mr. Williams had left the employ. Miss Roberts and Mr. E. Smith were elected by ballot to till the vacancies. The Library Committee has been reformed, and as there are any number of good books for the use of members, a very successful year is anticipated. After the business portion of the meeting an excellent programme was rendered under the direction of Mr. Win. Astley. Instrumental trios by Messrs. McElwain. Garland, and Kemp, also Miss Adams and Messrs. Adams and Crawford: trio, by Messrs. Purchas. Worslcy. and Cope, Messrs. Lewis, Astley. and French, also Misses McGregor. Ash worth, and Clow; songs by Messrs. Hulhert. Purchas. and Miss Teague: recitations by Miss Speary and Mr. Whitmarsh: and a violin solo hy Mr. McElwain. Mr. Teppett made nn acceptable accompanist. A vote of thanks to the organiser and the performers was followed by refreshments, and a pleasant hour was spent before the proceedings closed.
