THE MADSEN GUN.

NOT UP TO THE LEWIS.

(Received 8.35 a.m.)

LONDON, June 21. Mr .T. I. Macpherson, speaking in the House of Commons, said that the Madsen quick-firing gun was not as accurate as the Lewis. The military authorities also believed that it was not humanly possible for any machine gun to have the opportunity of firing 5,000 rounds in a day. Not a general would allow the troops to go into action with the Jladsen gun as it stood. The flash could be seen hundreds of yards away, and the gunner would be wiped out in a quarter of an hour. It was sheer murder to ask soldiers to use it, but improvements might yet be made. If so, the gun would again be tried. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
