VISIONS AND PORTENTS.
The disturbed state of the popular mind in Ireland is reflected in the stories of miraculous happenings of visions and apparitions that are being circulated. The latest of these (says the "Daily Sketch") comes from Galway, where it ls reported that apparitions of the Blessed Virgin have been seen by several persons in a wood near Aughriin, some miles from North Balllnasloe. A similar apparition Is recorded to have appeared before the battle of Aoghrlui, while It was from Galway that a story came some weeks- ago of a new-born baby who foretold the end of the war, and died before events discredited the prophecy. A week ago Roscommon discovered St. Colmcille's black pig that was to be the harbinger of disaster in Ireland. Iv this case the pig, with its family, appeared out of a crack in the ground, thus plainly intimating that its usual place of abode was down below. The animal was Intelligibly shy, and only allowed herself and her family of bonhams to appear to the children of St. Colmcille. Prophecies brought up to dale are in great vogue ln Ireland at present, probably because they all breathe calamity and dis- i aster, and so fit ln with the pessimistic | feeling that prevails. |
