OFFICIAL STORY OF THE ATTACK.
ATTACKS ON BELGIAN FRONT SHATTERED, (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON', May 27. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—Strong hostile attacks, preceded by a bombardment of great intensity, developed tliia (Monday) morning on wide front against the British and French between Rheims and Soissons, and against the French between Ijocre, three miles south-west of Ypres, and Yoormezeelo, two miles south of Ypn-s. There was considerable hostile artillery firing on Sunday and through the night on the British front A French communique reports active artillerying north and south o£ the Avre, but no infantry action in that sector. , A Belgian communique reports:—During the night, after a violfcnt bombardment, German shock troops attacked the Belgian advanced positions between Passchcndaele canal and St. George?, six miles north-oast of Vpree. Thoy momentarily penetrated our trenches but were ejected. An attempted hostile attack in the region of Boesingho. three miles northwest of Ypres, failed under our barrage.— (A. and X.Z. and Renter.)
