RUGBY. THE SECOND ROUND". PONSONBY DEFEATS MARhSTS. GRAMMAR FALLS TO 'VARSITY. COLLEGE RIFLES BEAT'S GRAFTON. The second round of the Rugby Union championship was played on Saturday afternoon, wins being registered by College RIUeS, University, and Ponsonby. At Eden Park there whs -a lair crowd of spectators, hut the attendance at the Show Grounds was very poor. On the latter grouud College Rifles had all the better of Grafton, who were handicapped by being a man short, but made a good dght of it, and when the game ceased. Just before time, owing to an accident to Longville, had scored 25 points to 3. For College Rifles Wilson (5), Bagnall. Hearu. and Mclnnes scored tries, two of which were converted by Laxon. Fur Grafton Nixon kicked a penalty goal. At Eden Park a sparkling game was provided, Grammar Old Boys and University, and the teams see-sawed for the lead throughout lie ttrst spell. PONSONBY ACCOUNTS FOR GRAFTON. WINS FOR CITY AND NEWTON. , The first of the championship games under Northern Union rules this season were played on Saturday afternoon on Victoria Park and at the Shore. Conditions were almost ideal, a*nd an attendance of about 5000 witnessed the two games at the Park. The main attraction was provided in the meeting between Ponsonby and Grafton, and rather a disappointing game resulted in favour of the Ponsonby thirteen by a margin of 17 points to nine. The game was not so good an exhibition as is usual on thls grotiud. Maddison did the kicking for the winners, while Clarke. McGregor, and McClymont scored the tries. Ifwerson made three goals for the Grafton team, and a brilliant try was registered us the result of McGregor's work. On the other ground City snatched a victory from Maritime by two points. Thov scored tlfteen. by three tries and as many goals, and the Waterside team made ten of their thirteen points from the field. Over at the North Shore Newton played the local lenin. and rather a one-sided game resultc lln a win for the visitors by thirty poluts as against two.

Brotherhood and Wild Rose met ou the Domain, resultiug In a win for Wild Rose. In the tirst half of the game the two teams were well matched, but Brotherhood tired badly at the finish, the final score being 0 to 2 in Wild Rose's favour. For the winners, Hill (2), Lornio (2), Haves and Graham were the scorers, while Webster notched both for Brotherhood. North Shore and V.M.C.A. tried conclusions at the North Shore. The game was very fast from the beginning. V.M.C.A. played a good game umil half-time, when they went to pieces, and Shore had practically their own way.
