WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC LEAGUE.

The Ladies' Canvassing Committee held a meeting in the Council Chamber on Friday afternoon, when the subject of canvassing the city was discussed with members of the Soldiers' Gift Committee. Mrs. Gunson, president of tho Auckland Women's Patriotic League, was in the chair, aud briefly explained that the meeting had been called to made further arrangements for a successful campaign. Mr. A. R. Roberton said that it waa the opinion of the members of the Business llen'e Committee that the beet results would be obtained by a house-to-house canvaes to obtain promises of a weekly or monthly donation, the canvass to be arranged by a group committee in that area. Mr. Percy Upton, in (speaking on the same subject, said that on former occasions the house-to-houee canvass for monetary assistance had not brought in the amount that was expected, and that was why he wiehed to follow the English example and obtain promises of regular contributions. Mr., G. Wilson aleo epoke, and said that already they had promises of £5,500 two weeks before the campaign started. Mrs. Butler said that she bad found that there were many enthusiastic workers who had said they would put their whole soul into the campaign, but tlicy would not take up the continuous canvassing for permanent eubscriptione. Mrs. Clay, wife Qf the Mayor of Mt. Albert, also expressed the difficulty she had found in organising the workere of her district. After calling four meetings she found that the ladies would not take up the proposed street-to-street canvass if it wee for regular contributions. Mrs. Woods, who was acting ac representative for Mrs. McPhail, wife of the Mayor of Birkenhead, also stated that they had found the game difficulty. Mr. Roberton suggested that members of the Business Men's Committee should address women'e meetings in these suburbs and further explain the working of the 6chcine. The Business 'Men's Committee had decided that as co-ordin-ation was so essential, the president (Mrs., Guneon) and Mre. Maefarlane.be nominated for their committee. Mre. Butler having resigned from control of the Canvassing Committee, Airs. Afaofarlane was appointed to the vacancy. Mrs. Gunson announced she had made arrangements to obtain the use. of the premises in Queen Street lately occupied by Messrs. Hutchineon Bros, as a centre for the campaign.
