Sir, —I would like to call your attention to the- rather extraordinary position the City Council' have taken up in refusing permission to open the picture theatres here on Good Friday. For'years past this permission has been granted without question:. There will be many visitors in town during the coming holidays, and in case of unfavourable weather these people will be forced to «t»y in the crowded hotels and boardinghouses because of a little narrowmindedness on the part of the City Council. In refusing the necessary permission 1 contend the Council are not studying the convenience of the general public— their first duty. ' Sir, —I beg to call your attention to soldiers' leave. There arc now in camp at Featherston, TauherenikaUi Slid Trentham, about one thousand Aucklanders. Now, Wellington soldiers get week-end 'cave —that is from Saturday; 12 noon till 12 noon on Monday, and wn cannot go past Palmerston North. This is not our. camp commanders fault, but is due to instructions from head office.—l am, etc., FAIKPLAX. ■;■:;' THE 75 MILES RANGE GUN. . ■ (To the Editor.) Sir, —A '"long arm "■ machine without doubt! As to the shell, that is"probnbly litted up as an aerial torpedo which, fired at an angle of 45 degrees, would, cause this missile to ascend to an altitude of 15 miles when sighted for on objective 75 miles away. A combustion engine would start a propeller once the shell had arrived at the culminating point of its trajectory, timed to travel its' aerial flight to that large target, the city of Paris, in somewhat under twominutes.—l am, etc., H.J.,
