NEW ANGLICAN CHURCH.
OPENED AT POINT CHEVALIER. St. Stephen's Church, Point Chevalier, was opened and dedicated yesterday afternoon by Dr. Averill, 'Anglican Bishop of Auckland. Services have been held in a motor garage at Point Chevalier for about a year past by Rev. J. H. Cable, vicar of St. Columba's Churclij Grey Lynn. The new church, which comes within the Grey Lynn parochial district, is built on a central site in Dignan Road. It is a wooden building, capable of seating about 200 people, and is expected to meet the needs of the residents for a number of years to come. It was built from plans by Messrs EBartley . and Son, and the exterior is very picturesque, the roof being of shingles and capped with a small bell turret. Already a number of gifts have been made towards the equipment of the church, nnd among them are a bell, the altar-table, a handsomely embroidered frontal and hangings, a chair for the bishop's use, an oak altar cross, and a set of brass vases. The church was completely filled at the opening service. The.bishop, in his address, congratulated the district on securing such a handsome place of worship, and expressed the hope that the spiritual life of the district would be benefited. He exhorted the people not to give way to slackness in spiritual matters, and allow their religious life to become atrophied. The service was conducted by Rev. J. H. Cable, assisted by Messrs T. Charter and C. E. Harrison, lay readers, and a surpliced choir of twelve local boys, whose singing was much appreciated. A substantial sum was given by the congregation towards the building fund; Another service was conducted in the evening by Mr C, E. Harrison, and was well attended.
