THE LIQUOR BURDEN.
IMITATION OX , CANADA URGES. LONDON, March 13. During a discussion in the House of Commons on national finance, Mr Lief Jones, member for North Westmoreland, stated that in 1917 the drink bill was f259,000,000. The latest figures would probably reach £270,000,000. This expenditure was overburdening the nation. He urged imitation of the Canadian and American restrictions. Mr J. R. Clynes (Under Secretary to the Department of Food Control) stated that the materials used in the production of beer had been greatly over-estimated, amounting to only 3 per cent of. the nation's food.—(Renter.)
