RUGBT. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. i WELLINGTON TURN THE TABLES, A FAST, EXCITING GAME. (Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Saturday. The return match, Auckland v. Wellington, was played on Athletic l'nrk'this afternoon, In the presence of about 10,000 spectators. The conditions were almost perfect for a jood exhibition of the game, the turf being dry and fast, and only a slight breeze prevailed, which did not handicap either side to any extent. From the outset a fast, exciting fame was played, which kept the spectators at a high pitch of enthusiasm. Auckland appeared to advantage at the opening, but presently .the Wellington forwards struck, their combination, ond their clever footwork proved the deciding factor in the game, though It was never at any time onesided. As a matter of fact, the Auckland forwards showed up better than they did in the first game, but the backs lost a number of chances by their fumbling and faulty handling. Wellington were the'first to score, Coles getting a try from a passing bout, and Morton converting. Then Auckland started their tally with a try by Wilson, and tamedlately afterwards the best passing bout the Ancklunders brought off lv the match resulted in Wilson scoring again, and McLean converting. Wellington evened up shortly after its the result of a penalty '. goal by Morton. In the last stage or the spell, Wellington's backs opened up a fine series of passing bouts, with the result that just before half-time Jackson scored, and Morton converted. _••_■•;■, t , m _ , r With the scores 13 to 8 at half «™c. « was looked on as yet anybody's game but at the beginning of the second spell the Wellington forwards played over Auckland. Thomas and Hlslop scored two tries as the result of forward work. Morton converted the last try, and the score was -1 to 8, and only twenty minutes to go. ln the last twenty the Auckland forwards more than played up to the local men, and instituted a series of attacks, while the Auckland backs put in much improved work, although the home players defended desperately. A passing bout, finished off with a dribbling rush, gave a try to Minogue, which wns not converted. AucKland continued to press right up to the last minute, but failed to male any further Impression, and the game ended ln Wel--1 lington's favour with the score 21 to 11. I It was generally concoded that the '■ better team won, but those who have fol--1 lowed the Auckland play through the season are satisfied that if the Auckland backs h«d handled up to their customory standard it would have neen a case or touch and go as to which would be the winner.
