The ex-Czar and his family have been removed to Tobolsk, in Siberia. Twenty-four men are required for home service at Trentham camp. During last week 14 large British steamers were sunk by submarines. Thirty trainloads of German wounded are traversing Liege daily for Germany. Fighting in Madrid continues, the soldiers firing on the crowds in various parts of the city. Rugby representative match, Wellington v. Auckland, on the Domain tomorrow afternoon. The battle of Ypres has been renewed, and the British tire making good progress against their objectives. Surgeon-General Henderson, Director of Medical Services in New Zealand, has been made a Companion of the Bath. Twenty-seven Military Medals have been awarded to New Zealanders, including six men from the Auckland province. The inquiry into the charges against local officials of the Postal Department was resumed at the Chamber of Commerce to-day. Austrian aeroplanes bombed Venice as a reprisal for the attacks on Pola. Patients in a hospital Were killed, but the material damage was slight. Sir James Allen states that the total number of soldiers returned to New Zealand up to July 31 was 10,917, and of these 9,265 had received their discharges. The drawing of the ballot for the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Reinforcements will be commenced on Tuesday. Altogether about 14,000 names will be drawn. The German Socialist paper "Vorwaerts" declares that the resignation of Mr. Arthur Henderson is the prelude to the downfall of Mr. Lloyd George's Cabinet. The Pope's Peace Note is declared by the British Press to be strongly marked by German inspiration, and to show a lamentable ignorance of opinion in Allied countries. The new attack by the Canadians north of Lens resulted in the taking of all the first objectives on a front of over 1000 yards, and the capture o! several hundred Germans. The French and British artillery is active all along the western front," evidently in accordance with a concerted j plan, but the bad weather detracts a, good deal from its effectiveness. The full text of the Pope's Peace JS T ota has been published. It suggests the mutual restoration of territory, the reduction of armaments, and the" recognition of international arbitration. A large deputation, representing thai towns and local bodies of the Wellingtoa province, waited on Ministers at Wellington yesterday, and urged the vigorous prosecution of the hydro-electrio scheme. Dr. Fisher, President of the British. Board of Education, suggests that there shall be one great memorial to those who have fallen in the war, in the form of a great university, open to the whole population.
