The relatives of Liout.-Commander Saunders, the Aucklander who has reecntlv received the V.C, give accounts ot ( the "deed for which probably he wasi, awarded the distinction. Early in May I the letters were written, and he had then |. just returned to port with his ship, sol state the letters, completely smashed and ,< } crippled. He had fallen in with an., enemy ship, and had engaged it at a| ( range of 81) yards. The enemy was sunk. !, but some of'the crew were rescued. The J Lieut.-Commander came out of the en-i. gagement with two holes drilled through r his hat and one through the side of his . coat. LIEUT. A. C. A. SEXTON. Mr. ('. H. Sexton has received a cable from his son (Lieut. A. C. A. Sexton), . who was wounded on the 14th June.'; stating that his right leg has been amputated just above the knee. He is now ' progressing well. This is the second , time that Lieut. Sexton has been wounded, first in the Somme fight and ' now in Messines, both wounds being in ' the same leg. LIEUTENANT H. R. HOGG. , Second-Lieutenant H. B. Hogg, reported wounded, is the second son of Mr. 11. R. Hogg, of Opotiki. He received his education at the Opotiki school, and later at the Auckland Grammar School. On leaving school he went to the Alick- j; land University, where he studied law, : having one more subject to pass in order : to take his LL.B. degree. UTEUTENANT A. V. DONNAN. Second-Lieutenant A V. Donnan. died of wounds, was appointed Agricultural Instructor under the Auckland Education i Board about five years ago. He held a diploma from Hawkesbnry College, and I was one of its most distinguished stu- j dents. Later his work was specially with the Technical College students. He enlisted in one of the earlier drafts as an N.C.0., and after examination received his commission. Feeling reference to his death was made at the last meeting of the Education Board. SERGEANT J. ERASER. Sergeant John Eraser, reported wounded, was a well-known Auckland constable prior to his enlistment. He was a native of Scotland, and had only been in Auckland a short time before he left with an early draft. He was in the Water Police division. CORPORAL V. R. CROVVHURST. Advice has lieen received by Mrs. S. Crow-hurst, of Newmarket, that her son (Corporal Vivian) has again been J wounded. He left New Zealand with his ' brother in the Fourth Reinforcements, and took part in tlie Gallipoli campaign. Mrs. Crowhurst's last two sons went into camp last Thursday, this making five sons, one having died at Trentham two years ago. PRIVATE P. R. WRIGHT. Private Percy Wright (wounded) is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Wright, of Auckland. He is 20 years of age. and left with the Eleventh Reinforcements. Prior to his enlistment he was engaged in farming in the Mangawcka district. PRIVATE F. H. WALKER. Private F. 11. Walker (severely wounded) is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. Walker, "of Avondale. He is 27 years of age, and was engaged in fruitgrowing with his father. His wife resides at Avondale. PRIVATE G. A. CHESTER. Private George A. Chester (seriously wounded) is the son of Mr Chester, of Devonport. Prior to enlisting with the Sixteenth Reinforcements he was employed by Messrs. A. H. Nathan, being stationed at the Friendly Islands. He is 33 years of age, and took a great interest in football. PRIVATE G. OLSEN. Private George Olsen (wounded) left with the Fourteenth Reinforcements. He is 20 years of age, and was a member of the City Fire Brigade prior to his enlistment. He wae a well-known boxer, being the holder of the New Zealand welterweight championship. GUNNER A. C. WILSON. Gunner A. C. Wikon (wounded and admitted to hospital) was serving with tbe Australian Forces. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of the Auckland City Council. His relatives reside at St. James' Street, City. CORPORAL E. W. GASSON.Corporal Ernest Walter Gasson (reported killed in action) was the fourth son of Mr. J. Gasson. of Devonport. He left with the First Battalion. N.Z. Rifle Brigade, and took part in the Somme offensive. Prior to enlisting. Corporal Gasson was engaged as a plumber in Morrinsvflle. An elder brother was killed at the Somme last year. PRIVATE A. L. HAYDON. Private A. L. Haydon. son of of Mrs. M. Haydon, of Otahuhu. was wounded in the left leg in the battle of Messines. Later advices state that he is making a good recovery, and intends making a trip to Ireland before reioinin" the division. PRIVATE P. O. P. MORAN. Private Percy 0. P. Moran (killed in action) was the youngest son of Mm E. Moran, Granga Road. Mount Eden. He was a carpenter by trade, and prior to enlisting, was working on the West Coast. He was educated at the Northcote school, and was for many years a student at the Auckland Technical College. PRIVATE R. KNILANDS. Private Robert Knilands (killed in action) was born in Wellington. He left with the Seventeenth Reinforcements, and prior to his enlistment, was engaged as electrician. He was 33 years of age and resided with his parents in Auckland. PRIVATE L. iroC_CINS. Private Lot Uuekins (seriouely wounded) left with the Twelfth Reinforcements. He was born in Oxfordshire, and arrived in New Zealand about five years ago. He has six brothers on active service, one being reported killed, while another is missing. Before his enlistment he was a conductor on the Auckland tramways. His wife resides at Newmarket.

PRIVATE D. LAMONT. Private Donald Laraont (wounded and gassed) was born in Glasgow, Scotland' and came to New-Zealand six years ago [with his sister. He -went away with the 'Fourteenth Reinforcements, being later transferred on arrival in France. Ho was a keen Association football player, being a member of the Tabernacle Club. Prior to leaving New Zealand he was in the employ of Irving Clarke of this city. His sister, Mrs. Marsh, resides at Grey Lynn. PRIVATE (». H. BCSBY. \ Mr. Albert N. Busby- of East Street, Auckland, has received advice to the effect that his son. Private Georg. ■ j Henry Busby, was wounded in the right I shoulder during the recent Battle ot £ Messines. Private Busby was a railway igauger before the war, and has two Ibrothers serving with the col ours—Staff. ''Sergearit-Mnjor N. C. Busby (a member |of the New Zealand Permanent Staff), and Sergeant E. S. Busby, who left with the Twenty-fourth Artillery. Mr. A. N. 'Bushy saw service in the Maori War during 1862-60, for which he received the New Zealand Medal. LANCE-CORPORAL O'MEARA. Lance-Corporal E. O'Mcara, reported wounded, is the second son of Mr. and Mrs W. O'Meara. of Mount Eden Road. He was educated at the Wellesley Street and Graiton Schools, and was well known in boxing circles, having held both the bantam and feather-weight amateur championships of Auckland. At the time ot enlisting in the Fourteenth Reinforcements he \vas employed at the ParkerLamb Timber Co. His elder brother, Private W. J. O'Meara, is also on active service in France. PRIVATE S. A. BOND. Further cable advice has been received which states that Private S. A. Bond, \ son of Mr. A. Bond, of Remnera, was 'severely wounded in the right arm and leg and is now in Brockenhurst Hospital, England. He is reported to be progressin" favourably. PRTVATE A. H. CARLETON. Private Albert Carleton, reported , killed in action, was the eldest son of I Mr. W. H. Carleton, of Helensville. He was 23 years of age, and enlisted with ! the 17th Reinforcements. Two of his Ibrothers also enlisted, and are at pre- | sent in hospital in England, having been I badly wounded. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of the Railway Department, being stationed at Whangamarino. RIFLEMAN W. DEAN. Rifleman W. Dean, dangerously ill, and admitted to hospital, is 20 years of age, and enlisted with an early reinforcement. He has a younger brother still in the firing line, while another brother returned invalided, after serving on Gallipoli. PRIVATE G. SEI__ARS. i ' As a Rugby footballer the late Private <>. Sellars reached the highest pinnacle of success, being selected to represent 1 New Zealand in tbe team which visited ■ America in 1913, also playing for New Zealand in a number of ether matches. . iAs a schoolboy he played for Napier Street .School, and then joined the Ponsonby District football Club in 190? as a third grade player, but before the season -was over he was promoted to the seniors, being always a popular phiyer,.. of the team, and a. member of the coiris ' tnittee for several years. He represented Auckland continuously since 1909, won a., : North Island representative cap, an.. Was a member of the native team which toured Australia in 1910. For his weight he was considered one of the best forwards who have ever played in New Zealand. LANCE-CORPORAL H. DEAN. Lance-Corporal Hector Dean, reported admitted to hospital, is the younger brother of Rifleman Walter Dean, and enlisted about two years ago. TROOPER T. N. DODDS. Trooper Tom Dodds, reported killed in action was the youngest son of the late James Dodds, gardener at Government House. He was educated at the Parneil and Grammar Schools, and prior to enlisting, was on the staff of Messrs. Archibald Clark, of this city. His only • brother is on active service with the 19th Reinforcements. :
