MILITARY PUNISHMENTS.

The Advisory Board of the New Zealand Patriotic War PLclief Societies wrote to the Minister for Defence, pointing out that dependents were made to suffer ■when a soldier n.aking an allotment was undergoing punishment for military offences. Sir James Allen has replied, stating that the Array Act defines the punishment that can be inflicted for Tarious military offences, and lie is powerless to vary this in any way.
The usual punishments for ordinary offences take the form of short periods of detention or field punishment. The soldier draws no pay while serving such. Tills is the principal part of the punishment. He adds that it is absolutely vital that the discipline of the military force should be maintained, and a certain class of men were less amenable to discipline than others.
