RECRUITING SCHEME NEEDED. REVENUE DEFICIENCY. MELBOURNE, June 14Parliament has opened. The Prime Minister, in moving the suspension of certain Standing Orders to enable the Supply Bill to be passed and the postponement of the Governor-General's policy speech, said the Government proposed that members of both Houses should meet to-morrow lo discuss \the pressing question of recruiting and to formulate a scheme to ensure a sufficient supply of troops for overseas.
Mr. L. E. Groom (Honorary Minister), representing the Minister for Defence, stated that 300,521 troops had embarked for active service, and 27,101 had returned. Of these 20,248 had been discharged and 3,180 had returned to the front.
The Treasurer (Sir John Forrest) delivered the Financial Statement. The estimated revenue to the end of June is £32,575.300, and the estimated expenditure £35,448,414, leaving a deficit of £2,873.114. The total public debt is £165,544,532.—.(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
