SECOND DIVISION, MEN AND WOMEN. /"CHAMPION considers that what the Right Hon. Mr Massey stated at Belfast should be carefully considered, as his patriotism hadn't vanished. /"CANADA states her maximum contribution ' is fixed, aud that her industries and agriculture must be kept going, and Champion is nt the opinion that the Canadian Ministry is just as patriotic and far seeing as our own. is strongly opposed lo J Kaiseris—. or one-man power. In any sphere: politically, as the rigour of the law is the height of oppression when interpreted by arrogance. "CV)R this sane and patriotic advice Champion solicits no local or Imperial honours handed out by man, as 'hey are of little value beyond creatiug a swelling (vide "London Times"!, but only asks you to continue using "CHAMPION" MUSCLE RAISER FLOUR and "STANDARD" OATMEAL AND ROLLED OATS, packed to suit the occasion.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING LETTERS CAREFULLY :— (Reprints from "Auckland Star," June 11 and 13. 1917.1 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. AND SECOND DIVISION. tTo the Editor.)

Sir. —I heartily endorse the sentiments expressed in your sub-le.ider of tbe 9th Inst. It would he most unfair and cruel ior any employer to placate who he considered was a non-essential, obviously Lo wouldn't be employed unless be was. recpilred. I tun pleased Mr T. Peacock, a member of the Chamber, stated such a selection would give offence. Til.- Appeal Board is the proper one lo give these decisions. I thtnk the Chamber wanted to eli'-it what wns to be The Dominion's maximum contribution, as no Ktbciencv Hoard could advise what should he ,ir,nc without knowing the maximum. The lion Mr Mnssey, when speaking at v Mayoral nanquet at Belfast en November 24. 1916 ivi.le London cablese, stated if lhe Dominion contributed 100.000 incu ii would be a fair proportion. Sir .lames Allen, a month later, when speaking at Dunedin. said no Ministerial enroeiragcn.ciit had been given to the prevalent idea that 100,000 was to he tho Dominion's contribution. Captain Brown, of the Canadian Recruiting Board, when passing through Auckland on his way home (vide. "Star." 2!ith February. 1917 i. stated that Canada had promised to raise 500.000 men. but so far only .'iSLOOn had enlisted. Subsequent Canadian cables indicated that over 200.000 single men had not yet responded. Canada's contribution, on a 10 per c-ent basis, would he about fioO.ooo men Australia? position is somewhat similar to Canada's. The linn. Mac Donald, when speaking at Christchureh on the 21st. March. stated H7.irt!l had gone to the Front and 10,600, Including Maoris, were in camp in New Zealand, and I think I am safe In saving S.OOO have since enlisted, making a total of K5,73H men. The Dominion, on a 1" per cent basis, requires about 15.000 more. If they can lie spared. ODd this is the question at issue. America has joined the Allies and promises to raise an army of 82,"i.0i)0 by October. The foregoing facts require careful consideration.—l am. etc.. •luoe 9. P. VIRTUE.

SECOND DIVISION. (To the Editor.) Sir. —Since writing on the 9th Inst. Canada has Used be-r maximum contribution at 501,000 men. which was promised during lfllfi. It is apparent only 400,000 men have enlisted, as 100.000 arc to be called up by conscription. Assuming that Canada has a population of say T.OOO.iMKi cthoiigb some say It Is mure, her contribution Is a littio. ..ver 7 per cent. New Zealand's contribution to date is about B* per cent, with 30,693 more ln the single class to call up. yet news from Wellington Indicates that the second class will be also called up.— I am, etc.. June 10. 1917. P. VIRTUE. I HAVE SPOKEN. V., AUCKLAND.
