BRIGADIER-GENERAL BROWN, D.S.O.

KTTJ.rTD LX FRANCE. Brisadier-General Charles Brown, whose death was announced yesterday, started life as a miner in the pit, working for the Westport Coal Company at Demuston. He joined the old volunteer corps there, secured his commission, and attended a.school for military instruction in Wellington, where his undoubted militarr ability firet attracted the attention of the authorities. Later he became captain in the Denniston Fries, and in this capacity had charge of what was perhaps the finest infantry corps at that time in the Dominion. On the initiation of the compulsory training scheme in 1911 the BrigadierGeneral, then still a captain, -went through the training course for officers at Tauherenikau, and was appointed area officer for North Canterbury. Later he was transferred to the West Coast mining disricts, where his tact and Knowledge of local conditions was one of the main factors in overcoming the opposition of the miners. On the outbreak of war BrigadierGeneral Brown left New Zealand as a captain- and his career, from a coahniner to a brigadier-general, has been watched by all who knew the sterling fellow that Chariev Brown -was. By his death New Zealand has lost one of its finest military men.
