SILVER TORPEDOES AND SILVER BULLETS.
As the last day for subscribing to the Sixth German War Loan approached, tinappeals in the Press became more agonising, nnd in many eases indistinguishable from downright balderdash. A fair specimen is the following from the "Kolnische Yolkszeitnng":— "The silver bullets of the British haberdasher will be answered by our powerful silver torpedoes. The hour of derision is close nt hand—the sixth financial battle. Let him who has not yet subscribed no longer delay. Gorm.inv and her allies are preparing with strong, ironclad hands to force the decision. Already we see the gate behind which is victory and the freedom of the nations. Who is there among us so wicked or so stupid as to rob the Fatherland of victory at this decisive hour? The German people, strong and great. stand, like a real German her.;, like Siegried, behind its leaders in these dais of destiny, and makes thankful obeisance to its brave ones lighting against a pack of eleven enemies.'' ._.
This is followed by a really beautiful passage: "We see the German eagle with pinions outspread for a new and hold flight into the land of peace, in which happiness and freedom dwell. The eagle will make this flight in spite of the fact that we are 'barbarians.' Not one of our enemies is strong enough to hinder his flight, a flight which lies in the historic development and iron law of the universe. But our people must be united. It can show its unity by subscribing to the loan. Is there anyone dastard enough to neglect, this great hour, to sleep through it, to dream through it?"
