DISTINGUISHED SOLDIERS.

OUR NAVAL ADVISER, AWARDED THE C.M.G. (By Telegraph.—'Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. His Excellency the Governor has received advice that the honour of Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George has been conferred upon Captain P. H. HallThompson, R.N., naval adviser to the Government of New Zealand.

Captain Hall-Thompson, who is 43 years of age, was appointed naval adviser to the New Zealand Government in April, 1014, and assumed command of H.Mjs. Philomel when the latter was handed over t 0 New Zealand in the same year. lie entered the Navy as a cadet at the age of 13, and earned rapid promotion, reaching the rank of commander hi 1005. Subsequently he held a post at the Admiralty, and was promoted captain in 1013. He has, of course, been on active service since the outbreak of the present war, though the naval censorship has prevented any information about him from being published in New Zealand. LIEUT. WYNNE CHILCOTT. The career of Lieut. Wynne Chilcott, M.C.. since he left with our Forces, has ■been marked by several promotions, and his latest achievement has been the winning of the Military Cross. He left New Zealand as a Q.M. Sergt., with the Main Expeditionary Force, having had previous military training as an officer in the Field Engineers. He was considered to be one of the most capable of the team which Lhat unit sent out to the tournaments. He left his position iv the Valuation Department to serve with the Dominion Forces, and after being on the Peninsula was appointed as billeting officer and sent to France with an advance guard. After being twelve months in France, be was appointed as assistant instructor in Bournemouth Military Camp, having been previously promoted to lieutenant on the field. 'Lieut. Chilcott. M.C.. has not conveyed in recent letters any indication as to th<- circumstances which led to his receiving the Military Cross. His mother. Mrs. M. V. Chilcott, lives at 7. Burgess Road, Dcvonport. Lieut. Chilcott was wounded some time ago. and sent to hospital in England, but during his long months of service since then he has happily escaped injury.
