ENEMY ATTACKS ON THE LADIES' ROAD.
LONDON, June 7. A report from Sir Douglas Haig state*: —There is considerable reciprocal artillery activity at a number of points, particularly on the north bank of the Scarpe. in the neighbourhood of Yimy Village, Armentiereß, and Ypres. There has been great aerial activity and bombing day and night with good results. We brought down 12 German aeroplanes and drove down six others out of control. Five of ours are missing. A French communique states:—After a bombardment the Germans delivered several attacks at different points between the Aillette River and Laonne Road, and north-west of Bray-en-Laonnois. Our lire immediately smashed two attempts against Mortierre Wood. A most intense artillery duel is in progress alone the Chemin dcs Dames. Tlie Germans launched two waves of attack against our positions near Hurtebise, but were thrown back after furious fighting. The enemy suffered appreciably in his concentrated efforts, and only succeeded in reaching our lines at a single point. Some portions of our front line trench remained in the enemy's hands. Everywhere else he was thrown back. —(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
