[ ON AND OFF THE FIRING LINE. LONDON, June 7. I War Distress in Norway. ' The food situation in Norway is sort- : ous, and has resulted in a great popular ' demonstration throughout the country. The Government, in order to prevent riots, prohibited the sale of alcoholic liquor for three days. All restaurants are closed, and all shops and stores and schools shut. The gasworks and elee- , I tricity plants are closed. Almost all workmen are on strike. Work throughout Norway is practically at a standstill.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) The German Story. A German communique states: "Artillery activity at the YVytsehaete bend has continued with short interruption. We repulsed strong reconnoitring advances. Fighting activity has increased in the neighbourhood of the coasts and the Artoie front. The English attacked strongly at nightfall north of the Scarpa. The Bavarians heavily drove back the enemy between Gavrelle and Fanipoux. The enemy penetrated our positions at Roeux railway station. Fighting continues. A Frcncli attack on Winterberg fniled. The enemy lost 11 aeroplanes yesterday." —(A. and N.Z. Cable.) To Help New Zealand Students. Major Lascolles, a New Zealander, has proposed a scheme by which students whose university studies are interrupted by the war may undergo intensive study for a year at Oxford. Tim authorities of the university nnd the Rhodes Scholars Itrusteee are favourable to the scheme, ! which will be submitted to the overseas i Governments.
