TRANSPORT TORPEDOED IN MEDITERRANEAN
140 SOLDIERS AND CREW MISSING. LONDON, May 20. The Press Bureau states that the British troopship Cameronia was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean on May 1.3. One military officer and 12S of other ranks are missing, and two of the ship's officers and nine of the crew. A survivor from the Cameronia states tliat she was torpedoed in the evening. There was some confusion at first among the troops, but discipline and calmness soon prevailed. The first boat was speedily launched, but was smashed, and many were drowned. The ship floated for 40 minutes. Destroyers came alongside, and the troops jumped on board until the destroyers were full. Other boats picked up the men in the water and on the rafts. Another account states that the explosion was heavy. The troops were below it tea, and a number were killed.- (A. and X_.. Cable.) The Cameronia, an Anchor Line steamer of 10 ; 963 tons, was built ia 1911.
