THE STRIKE DEADLOCK.
COMMITTEEMEN ARRESTED. A TENTATIVE SETTLEMENT. LONDON', May 20. Seven members of the Engineers' Strike Committee, including two from Sheffield, have been arrested and charged under the Defence of the Realm .-vet, with imjieding the suply of munitions. They were remanded, ine police raided the meeting place of the shop stewards at Walworth and seized papers. No arrents were made. Tile stewards have been most active throughout the country organising strikes. The police also raided the headquarters of the strikers' delegates.
The Sheffield Strike Committee passed a resolution that the strike should continue until the leaders were released.
Later v conference, over which tho I'rime Minister presided, was held between tiie Government and the executive of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. The following proposals were accepted. The executive of the Amalgamated Society nnd shop stewards to issue instructions to the men to resume work forthwith', the executive to negotiate with the Government regarding existing differences and to endeavour to continue this practice with a view to avoiding future stoppages. No further arrests to be made and the arrested men to be released on their own recognisances pending the hearing of the eases.
The executive of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers has advised the delegates of the shop stewards, now attending a conference in London, to return to (heir respective districts and direct the engineers to return to work: then to open negotiations through the trade union leaders. The Strikers' Committee interviewed the executive of the Amalgamated Society with a view to sending a joint deputation to the Minister for Munitions. — (A. and N.Z.)
