THE WAR WORK CAMPAIGN.

f ' * " MEN AND WOMEN Df AUCKLAND. ONXE MORE INTO THE BREACH. , To-morrow begins Auckland's great , campaign to assist the splendid work the j V.M.C.A. is doing for our boys at the 3 war. It is A DIRECT APPEAL FOR MONEY. r It would be almost unseemly on thk r occasion to resort to indirect methods of ' raising- funds. Surely our evmpathy * needs neither to be bribed nor" cajoled. I 1 Can there be any stronger ground of J appeal than tin- simple fact that those' 3 for whom we are making this effort are ' I in many cases our own soib and brothers, 1 and in all cases men who have given us ' the highest proof of tlieir friendship by offering to lay down their lives for us? WHY THlfcj APPEAL? f Countless letters from the front em--3 phasise the urg-ent need for such simple 3 Home Comforts—often only a cup of hot - cocoa—as this fund ia meant to supply, 3 and invariably speak of the V.M.C.A. aa 1 the beat, of all organisations for distrir buting these gifts right into the iiring- - line. That is why we are appealing for 2 help in conjunction with the V.M.C.A. * A DEBT. NOT A CHARITY. We have every confidence that the ; appeal will not fall on unwilling ears. _ i What man among us, if his SO n ask for ' bread will he give him a stone? And what mother or father, what brother or sister, or friend, but will willingly ,-aeri- . fice something to mitigate, by ever so , (little, the privation* of our kith and kin jj in the trenches, or help for v brief momenl to materialise their cherished j I vision of home. Beyond making the j I necessity known, there should be no need _ I for insistent pleading. A sense of grati,|tude and the voice of family affection j must speak more eloquently than an; arguments we can urge. A BRIEF CAMPAIGN. The campaign will dose on the 30th inst., and close, we 'lope, in victory. But to ensure that result the nest fifteen I days must be days of strenuous work on the part of us all. Here's a chance for we non-combatants. If we cannot be with our boy 6in the battle, let us see to it that for the next fifteen days OUR HEARTS ARE IN THE TRENCHES. I And where our hearts are there shall our treasure be also. For two years our boys : have been dying for us. Is it too much to ask that for two weeks we should live for them? We tell ourselves that if we only had our boys back safe with us there would be no gift too great to lavish on them. But remember that a pound in cash now is worth to them sheaves of such promiis- ' sory notes. To-day column after column in the papers are failed with the records of the victorious sacrifice our men at the war are making for ue. Shall one brief occasional paragraph suffice to hold all we are doing for them? HE GIVES TENFOLD WHO GIVES ' NOW. Send your donations to the hon. treasurer, The Auckland and Province ' Y.M.OA. War Work and Trench Com- , forts Committee, Old Poet Office, Shortland Street, Auckland. CHAS. RHODES, I Chairman Auckland City and Province V.M.C.A. War Work and Trench 1 Comforts Committee.
