APPEALS OF RESERVISTS.

TO-DAY'S CASES.

DETAILS OF CASES. FIRST AUCKLAND BOARD. The First Auckland Military Service Board is still engaged hearing appeals for exemption and extension of time by ; reservists. Some interesting cases were ' dealt with yesterday afternoon. I ENTENSION OF TIME. j Wm. Oscar Gubb, fruitgrower. Port! Albert (Mr. Elliott), showed that he had ! unusually large responsibilities, includ- j ing a heavy crop of winter apples to har- | vest, and ho was given till June 30. j Albert E. Dennis, bushman, Hoteo. and j Charles A. Laurie, manufacturers' agent, ' _lo.mt E:lcn. wore given till May 1: and Henry Mason, farmer, Glorit. was granted till the end of that month. SECTION 35 CASES. Frank N. Gray and Hugh R. Oray (Groat Barrier) wore called up under section 35. Medical examination, however, proved the former to be unfit for ! active service, so that Hugh's appeal of j being called up was automatically made [ successful, there being not two fit per- i sons liable in the family, as specified by j the Act. j A RELIGIOUS FARMER. Joseph Frank McCallum. farmer, Paparoa. appealed on the ground of oecupa- I tion. and he also had religious objections. | Ho had a property of 400 acres, which j comprised 100 acres of improved lease- | hold. Alter giving details of stock a-p----pellant said he was married in Septem- I ber. 1915. Asked by the Board as to his religious | views, appellant said he objected to kill- I ing. and was a member of the Brethren, j The Chairman: They are what outsiders call Plymouth. Rocks. j "Yes, that is what they call them," I replied appellant, who also said that if j he had to go in some service he would | rather enter a branch where he would not take life. The chairman said that many brethren had been before the Board, but in all cases they had failed to prove that their objections were those of a Church or sect having objections to military service as a fundamental principle. If appellant did not bring new proof in this relation the Board was afraid his appeal would meet with a similar fate. Appellant: Well, we do not regard ourselves as a Church. Each man has his own conscience as to military service. The chairman said the Board would be . prepared to give a certificate of recommendation that appellant be placed on j non-combatant work. j The case was adjourned to be referred to the Efficiency Board for report, to ascertain if any assistance could be given in the carrying on of the farm to release appellant. FARMER AND SHEARER. Robert J. Week, of Pohuehue, pleaded hardship and occupation, he being a farmer and a shearer, and the sole support of his father and mother. Appellant said he had a farm of 43d acres, and did all the work himself. AU the land was improved except 150 acres. He kept about 400 sheep, besides other stock. There was blackberry to be kept down. He also presented a petition signed by a number of settlers, who requested his retention as a shearer. Cross-examined appellant, who was refreshingly candid, said he was the chief shearer for the district. Last year he did about 2.000. He would be prepared to go out of the district to shear if he could get labour to tend the farm. ' The Board dismissed the appeal and allowed two months' time to appellant to make arrangements to get away. APPEALS ALLOWED. The appeal of Thomas B. Regan, farmer, Hakara, (Mr. Elliott) was adjourned sine die or until a brother returned from the front. It was pointed o-it that - appeUant had two brothers at the front, and one had been kißed in the South African war. Vivian C. Walsh, aviation instructor at the Kohimarama Flying School, was given exemption. DISMISSED. The appeal of Ernest W. Greenwood (Leigh) was dismissed. Shalto 11. McCrae, farmer, Mareretu, eaid he was one of six brothers, four of whom were eligible for service. His appeal was dismissed. RECOMMENDED LEAVE. It was decided on the application of the Colonial Ammunition Company to recommend the Minister of Defence to <rant the following leave sine die: — George (Montgomery and Benjamin Johnstone: and in respect of Captain G. Roff, of the scow Kahu indefinite leave was recommended. Messrs. Ambury's, Ltd., applied for leave on behalf of Samuel J. Millen, dairy factory manager, and the Board • recommended same. APPEALS NOT HEARD. Having been certified unfit for active service, the appeals of Robert R. Renall (Waiuku), Lawrence C. Whittaker (Big Omaha), and Archibald McD. Shaw (Pohuehue) lapsed. Guy B. Ashton (Whangateau), and Arthur J. Judd (Maungaturoto) withdrew their appeals.

A FORTUNE OF YOUTH. The appeal of Harold J .Fletcher, who was able to show that he was born in September, 1897, and was therefore under age, was allowed. A GENUINE SHEAR3R M ' ?. White (Henderson! who Sf__-td f can oath on the Bibl *> that he exemption on the ground farrtb 7 aS an eXpert shearer and a farm-hand, and the sole support of a widowed mother. w OI a

He engaged in farming in his spare time and also iv crutchmg. He crutched 10,000 sheep last year, when he shore between seven and eight thousand. Questioned by Major Conlan, the appellant lucidly gave the names of people for whom he Bhore, the number shorn at the sheds, and said he last averaged 190 per day. The Board heard a witness who engaged appellant. The chairman announced that it was satisfied that appellant was a genuine shearer, and as there was a shortage of shearers it was not the policy of the Board to send essential workers from the colony just now, although the time might come when that was necessary. The appeal would be adjourned sine die on the condition that White remained bis shearing occupation. ~

MISCELLANY. Thomas Roa, Mahurangi, was granted exemption, he being declared a native Maori.
